So, you have decided that you want to get a Siberian Husky and now you need to find a reputable husky breeder. A friend of mine is currently looking to get a husky for her family so I decided to help her find a responsible Husky Breeder. We found that following these easy steps will make finding the right husky breeder a much easier task.

The first thing you can do is Google Siberian Husky Breeders. A great site to check out is the American Kennel Club’s Siberian Husky Puppies Website. The AKC is a well known, reputable organization, so we figured this would be the safest place to start. The first thing that the AKC recommends you do is contact the AKC Siberian Husky Parent Club. The parent club for Siberian Huskies is The Siberian Husky Club of America (SHCA). Their website is very user friendly and we had no problem locating the link for husky breeders.

Click here to save up to 50% on flea treatment with generic Advantix.

We were pleasantly surprised when we came across the Siberian Husky Rescue link alongside the husky breeder link. If you don’t have the time for raising husky puppies but you would really like a husky for your family, adopting an adult husky is a great alternative. It’s important to get as much information about husky puppies before committing to raising one. Raising husky puppies is a lot of work. Your pups will require a lot of patience and a lot of your time.

I was also very happy when I came across the Siberian Husky Club of America, Inc. Code of Ethics. The club has strict rules regarding their referral directory. The SHCA will not allow husky breeders who are selling husky puppies to pet shops to be listed on their site. The Siberian Husky Club of America frowns upon this practice and does not want to be affiliated with breeders who participate in such business. This is a good sign since many pet shops get their husky puppies from puppy mills.

From an IDCR guest author:

Husky puppies are one of the most sought after pets for a variety of reasons. Husky puppies make great family pets because they have an excellent temperament, they are great with children, and they are relatively easy to care for.

Siberian Huskies are one of the friendliest dog breeds. They are usually rather calm and they are known to be one of the more sociable dogs. Huskies are part of the working group so they need an outlet to burn off some of their energy. Working Dogs are known to be independent and if they are not put to work, they can sometimes be hard to manage. Anyone who is thinking about getting a husky puppy should be an experienced dog owner who is capable of firm training. Husky puppies are very intelligent and they usually respond well to training. Like their ancestors, the wolf, huskies do not bark much. However, just like wolves, they are prone to howling.

Because the Siberian Husky has such a delightful temperament, they are very good with children. They are very affectionate and playful. The huskies gentle disposition may be a heritage from the past. The Chukchi people had the utmost respect for their dogs and they treated them as a member of the family. The Chukchi people let their dogs live alongside them in their family shelters and they always encouraged their children to play with them.Today, we still see the same strong bonds between huskies and children.

Husky puppies are relatively easy to care for. Huskies are by nature clean and they usually do not have any odor. When huskies are groomed their coats do not require and clipping or trimming. Their coats are however thick and they do require periodic brushing to keep their fur from matting. Huskies usually shed their coats once a year, and this is a good time to brush your husky.

I started digging through the archives (I love the feel of soft dirt in my claws) and found this old article written by Chris. I remember this night well. That Husky is SO lucky he didn’t mess with me! Anyways, it appears that this one, and a few others, were removed a while back by mistake. While I chew a good bone, enjoy the article!

Shadow the Fearless

The lone dog.. The scared dog.. Will he attack?

A few nights ago, Shadow and I went on our evening walk before bed. About halfway through our walk, we spotted a Siberian Husky about 30 feet away from us in the middle of the road. Fortunately, it was late and there weren’t any cars, so the dog was not in danger of being run over. The Husky simply stared at us and didn’t move. I had never seen this dog in our neighborhood and wasn’t sure how he would react. Over the years, I’ve learned a few of the visual cues that people can use to tell if a dog is likely to be friendly, but while this dog did not show aggression, it wasn’t being very friendly either.

As we kept walking, I tried not to stare directly at the dog, because I didn’t want to be outwardly aggressive toward it. However, I wanted to keep it in sight. When we passed the dog, he started to follow us.

Shadow is an 11 month-old lab that weighs around 50 pounds. He’s very friendly with other dogs, but I wasn’t sure what the Husky would do once our backs were turned.

After we turned a dark corner, the Husky was gone. This, however, made me start wondering what I would have done if the Husky had been aggressive. Would I have stepped between the dogs or let them work it out between themselves? My wife and I have had to pull fighting dogs apart before and it took both of us to do it.

Body Language

In hindsight, did I read the situation wrong? According to Paws Across America’s article on “How To Interpret Your Dog’s Body Language, Facial Expressions, and Vocalizations, the Husky appeared to be in an anxious state with its ears partially back and tail lowered. He was completely silent , but was watching us intently. I could see tags on the dog, but didn’t want to approach it in fear of scaring the animal or causing it to be aggressive.

How do you know if a dog may be aggressive?

The Dog Owner’s Guide has an excellent page on types of dog aggression and how to prevent it. According to their site, I was fortunate and did the correct things:

Stay on the road to avoid invading the dog’s territory.

Keep an eye on the dog, but not make direct eye contact.

Keep still and remain calm.

I was lucky because, while I believe this was a scared dog, he did not appear to be aggressive. I hope his owner was able to find him and return him to his home.
