We recently purchased a new type of lamb dog treat for Shadow and Abby. It was Nutro Natural Choice Treats Lamb and Rice Recipe.
Will Abby, the Finicky Eater, Enjoy Them?
There were a few times with our lab puppy, when I thought I was going to lose a finger due to his eagerness, but then again, he’ll eat almost anything! Abigail on the other hand is a much picky eater. At first I was not sure how she would react. She sniffed the treat and then decided it was acceptable and ate one, I guess she approved.
When it comes to looks, these sticks remind me a lot of a “Slim Jim”. (I’m not supposed to eat them anymore, but that’s another story.) They even have a similar texture and look. The fact that they can quickly and easily be broken into multiple pieces with your fingers is a definite plus. They can be broken into small 1 inch sections, which can then be used for training purposes.

Are the Nutro Lamb Dog Treats Likely to Cause Dog Food Allergies?
Please understand that when I review lamb dog treats or food on this site, I am primarily concerned with whether the treats contain ingredients that might cause dog food allergies. Dog allergies has become a focus of If Dogs Could Read, and after battling with food allergies with both of our dogs; I want to make sure they don’t have problems again.
Initially, the ingredients looked okay. Lamb, lamb liver were the top two ingredients. While I have read about some dogs developing allergies to lamb, our dogs do not seem to have a problem with it. However, when I went further down the list, I found soy grits, wheat flour, and wheat gluten, which were a concern for us. Our dogs have allergic reactions when exposed to grains.
We did use the small package of the lamb dog treats and the dogs seemed to enjoy them. However, from a dog food allergy point of view, we will not be purchasing this product again.

Switched my dogs off this brand was feeding Large Breed Adult to Wellness CORE. Mixed progressively over 4 weeks and already see a big improvement in skin and coat over the Nutro. Wish I would have switched to CORE years ago.
@sydney
That’s what I like to hear! I love it when people give suggestions from products they’ve used and tell about their experiences.
Thanks again!
Thank you for your comments. It is always nice to hear from someone with personal experience with a product.
The Nutro Choice Lamb and Rice treats made my dog sick. She has been on Nutro Choice large puppy mix for several months and I noticed that her urine was very concentrated during this time. I then added the Nutro Choice treats and she became very sick.

I hope she’s feeling better now.
After reading this, I think I’ll go back and read all your posts on dog allergies.
My boy likes his pupperoni – with no adverse reactions – but I do want to switch him to a more natural treat.
Nutro Natural Choice, however, ugh. Threre are SO many pets that have had trouble on this food (my own included-it’s what the rescue was feeding him). I feel their manufacturing practices are too lax, and I don’t trust them.

People continue to complain about Nutro products making their pets sick or killing them but the Nutro company hasn’t decided to pull any more prducts from the shelves. The recall was up to the company pulling the products. This was not a forced recall.
I’ve been giving them these treats everyday for five years, and they haven’t got tired of them yet. And if you read the package, you’ll see that the ingredients are so healthy.
I’m not familiar with this particular dog food product but I think that the allergy concern is a factor that really should be taken into account when choosing a dog food.
I love the blog title, by the way.
Thanks! My wife and I had a lot of fun picking the name.
Someone had told me that one can cause dog allergies if you allow them to eat seafoods, Is this true?
@Halloween,
I guess it depends on if your dog is allergic to that specific type of seafood.
It is frustrating to try and find healthy food and snacks for our beloved four footed friends. Our Yellow lab has never liked lamb. Do you think dogs might have an inner sense that helps them stay away from foods that they are allergic too? I mean common, Labs are suppose to eat anything.
