Fleas.. we hoped it was over

I woke up yesterday morning to an old familiar itch. I think my humans heard me because when Chris got up, he saw me scratchin’.  Dogs and fleas simply don’t mix.

That’s right, the fleas are starting to come back.

Last time the fleas came, the humans were successful in getting rid of them after dipping us, spraying the house, and then the back yard. This is, of course, in addition to our standard flea tablets we take every month.

I’m really tired of this. I had hoped the freeze from last week would have killed them off. I don’t getting wet, and certainly don’t like getting dipped (that stuff stinks). Hopefully, this next time will be the last for a while.

  1. I’m sorry to hear that they’re back Abigail. We’re going to do everything we can to get rid of those nasty fleas. : (

  2. So sorry to hear this! Are you sure your humans have treated all your resting places, washed the blankets and dog beds and make the anti-flea poison enter each crack in the wooden floor and similar? SY
PS If you are living in a farming area, I might be worth to ask one old, experienced farmer, they might have a trick or two uo their sleeves ;-) Or simply get some horse blankets!

Fleas are evil. They lay millions of eggs and some don’t hatch for a very long time.

    @SY
Now you know what the humans will be doing this weekend. : )

Here in Orlando, I’m afraid our property was once part of an orange grove. Not many farms around here.

  5. Yes, the flea season is going to be back soon and it’s looks like your human friends would have to start working to get rid of the fleas before you get bitten real bad.

There are many effective means of getting rid of fleas. The conventional way is making use of commercially available flea treatment medication like frontline, advantage etc but there are also some effective and safe natural remedies that you may want your human friends to try them out on you.

Just one more thing to take note of. You can’t get rid of all fleas simply by treating you alone. You need to get your human friends to treat the environment where you reside too. Your bed, the area where you sleep in, the backyard, the furniture all have to be de-flea to ensure that the flea eggs, larvae and the adult fleas are killed as well.

  6. If I was a dog I would definetly be gutted if I got flease! Mosquito bites or knots are bad enough!

  7. @Ann – Sounds like great advice. They are just starting to come back, so we’ll be spraying the animals, yard, house, etc. this weekend.

What a pain in the butt!

  8. Yes, dormant flea eggs are almost impossible to kill.

I am sorry to hear about this problem.

We have this very same problem. I don’t care how careful we are. The neighbors have four dogs, and their property is not well kept.

After a full cleaning, all it takes is one of the neighbor dogs to socialize with mine through the chain link fence, and the fleas are back.

Sorry to hear this. It is annoying, and often not the fault of errors in the dog owner’s recipe at all, but the world outside.

That’s so sad, I bet if a human had flees on them they would not even wait one day to take care of it. They would get dipped right away, if they only knew what we go through.

Thanks, I think we got it under control now. It takes diligence to keep them away (and for the time being, no more fosters to introduce fleas).

Unfortunately, there are evil things that we should fight all the time, one of which is fleas. Whatever we do to get rid of them, they always come back. Just like the flu viruses; we take the flu shot, but this doesn’t work for a long time.
    Sorry to hear that Abigail!

What kind of monthly tablet are you taking? Is it an insect growth regulator like program or sentinel? If it is, sounds like your owners might need to up the ante and get something that kills adult fleas like frontline or advantage.
