Is My Dog Going Bald? Canine Hair Loss Explained

old english sheepdogCanine hair loss is common with dogs. Dogs shed throughout the year, but primarily in the spring and fall. This is a normal occurrence and the extra hair can normally be brushed out on a daily basis to help keep it from being spread throughout your house.

Sometimes, dogs will have bald spots. This type of canine hair loss can be a cause for concern and should be checked out by a veterinarian.

The most common cause of canine hair loss is an allergic reaction to something. These allergens can be found in your dog’s food or caused by parasites like fleas.  (For more information on dog allergies, see “Canine Allergies: Is Your Dog Allergic?”) The itchy, inflamed areas caused by the allergens may cause your dog to lick, scratch, or gnaw the areas excessively and make them more inflamed.

The good news is that if an allergen is the cause of the hair loss, the coat should grow back over time once the allergen has been removed.

The second group of canine hair loss causes can be one of the following:

  • Thyroid disorder
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Tumor
  • Steroids

If your dog has been given steroids for another condition, the hair may return after the steroids are taken away.  These symptoms will need to be diagnosed by a veterinarian.

The third most common cause of canine hair loss is infections. These can be from sarcoptic mange or ringworm, and special dog shampoos are available to help with this condition.

Please take your dog to a veterinarian to get him/ her properly checked out before treatment.

After some searching, I found a shampoo for dogs with thinning hair. This might be helpful.*

I followed the link to the site. It appears to be legitimate.

  3. It may be mange or it could be a thyroid problem. Canine hypothyroidism can present itself in lots of different ways and hair loss is one of them. You need to get her checked out by your vet as soon as possible. The vet will probably do a simple blood test to start with and if this indicates that there might be a problem they will probably do a full blood panel.

I agree. Its a great idea to get your dog to the vet for a hair loss issue. It could be caused by a number of issues and a vet can help you find out and treat the underlying problem.

  5. Dogs hair loss is a result of allergies very often, great post. Diet also plays a big role in skin allergies as well as skin infections in dogs.

  6. Another reason for loss of hai would be an infection that can easily be transferred through a stray dog.

Stray dogs are a perfect breeding ground for a variety of bacterial infections and even a simple brush against a stray dog can be enough to transfer that infection to your dog.

Hence, be extra careful if there are strays in your area..

  7. I wish somebody would explain us the hair loss miracle of our cat Oscar. He looses an incredible amount of hair, preferably on our clothes, beds and the settee, without getting bald. If we could reproduce his hair growth secret and bottle it for human use, we would make a fortune! SY

  10. I am assuming that your veterinarian has seen evidence of fleas, prior to treating her with “drops”. I find that a good quality flea and tick control that I, as owner, can administer can prevent the miseries that are often connected with flea problems.

  17. We were so worried about our nine year old lab. She was shedding like crazy, we could pet her and come back with a hand full of hair. Took her to the vet and they ran lots of tests, turns out it was from stress. We had had lots of company for the month of December and then in Jan we left for a week. Poor baby didn’t know what to think. She is doing just fine again.

  18. chardee42 says:

I’m glad to hear she’s doing better. I think thats rather unusual for a lab to be so afraid of people. We’ve had a full blooded lab as well as a lab collie mix. They are usually really good with people.

  19. Sounds like allergies. This may possibly be from internal as well as outdoor. Exchange her food to something without corn or reproduction dyes. Spray tea tree oil on her skin and coat- this is a natural conditioner and calming to her skin.

  20. I agree to this statement “These allergens can be found in your dog’s food or caused by parasites like fleas”. Aside from the development stages of dogs. they will suffer hair fall due to this actors.
