Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, and ocean fish meal, are the first four ingredients you see on the back of a bag of Chicken Soup Dog Food (Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul). This is good start for a food that has gotten several great reviews.
Oatmeal, millet, rice, and barley are the grains in the food. (This is unfortunate for those of us with grain allergic dogs.) These are a good source of quality carbohydrates and even extra protein. Potatoes help round it out, as an additional source protein and carbohydrates. It also has flaxseed, a good source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids.
I found many positive reviews for Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul. Many agree that the manufacturer has their priorities in order by putting the meat first and reducing the amount of fillers like wheat, soy, and corn. Some people also said the food is very reasonably priced.
When our Labrador Retriever was eating the Chicken Soup puppy food, we got great results. When he was 11 months old, we switched him to the adult dog food. Within a few weeks, he started having problems with losing hair around his eyes and muzzle. After taking him to the vet, they recommended we try an antihistamine to see if the allergy effects went way.
The good news is that the allergy effects dissipated in a few days after giving him the antihistamine. Unfortunately, once we stopped, the symptoms came back. A friend of ours knew a lady who owned a specialty pet store and she recommended we talk to her as she was very knowledgeable regarding dog food allergies.
When we went to her store, the lady started by asking what we were feeding him. She said that she had heard some really good things about Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and even sold it, but that he might be allergic to some of the ingredients. She recommended we try a grain free food made specifically for dogs with allergies. We bought a bag that day and got him started on it.
It takes around six weeks after you start a dog on a new food to notice any real change. It’s very important to try a food with little to no ingredients that they’ve ever had before. That way you can rule out any of the ingredients in their current food. Another vital factor is to make sure the dog does not eat anything other than this one food during the time of the trial.
I’m happy to report that after six weeks, Shadow’s allergies are doing much better. The hair around his eyes has grown back as well as around his muzzle. It turns out he was allergic to the grains in Chicken Soup Dog Food and switching him to a grain free food helped his dog food allergy a bunch.
I really think Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul is a high quality food. As long as your dog does not have a grain allergy, it’s an excellent choice.
I’ve heard good things about Chicken Soup Dog Food. My dogs are not allergic, but its great to know about the possibility of allergy conditions.
I personally wouldnt switch so much. Give a new food time to adjust to your dog’s system and see how he handles it before trying something new.

This is really quite useful. I had honestly never heard of Chicken Soup Dog Food before reading this post and now I’ll be sure to check it out for my dogs.
I was sad because the book is not available in bookstore in my place. I really hope I will get a copy. AFter reading your blog it makes me curious what is the whole story of this book
Chicken Soup isn’t bad….But I am not crazy about the diamond products (it is owned by diamond.) They do have Puppy, Adult, and Senior in their cans. In dry food they have puppy adult and senior as well as a large breed line. You are on really good foods now. I think you should stick with them.
Really its a looking a well nutrition rich diet for dogs. Chicken Soup is really containing all essential elements that are much needed for a dog’s growth. thanks for such nice post.
I was very unhappy with Chicken Soup for puppies. At the breeders suggestion I bought a bag for our puppy and was very unhappy for a number of reasons. Firstly his stools are so loose that I can almost not pick the up, secondly his breath smells like rotten fish. I called the company and voiced my problelm with their product. Their answer to me was, ” go out and buy a new $30 bag of their food and see if it makes a difference. What exactly does that mean? If I had called Royal Canin or even Purina I would have been sent out a handful of coupons to ensure that I remain a satisfied customer. The vet on staff at Chicken Soup even called me to make the suggestion of purchasing a new bag. My puppy has only eaten about $8 of the food. So she wanted me to spend another $30 on a new bag just to see if it made a difference. You are seriously kidding me!!!!! On top of that she suggested that I take my new puppy to the vet because he could have a serious metabolic issue. That was her reason why he smells. She couldn’t admit that he wreaks like the food in the bag that he has been eating for two weeks. My laundry room smells like this bag so it is not a surprise that my puppy should stink too. I will be going out to purchase a bag of Blue Buffalo. I am quite certain I will NOT have any smelly issues with the Blue Buffalo. The dog food business is very competitive and this company should realize that. Anyone who calls with a problem should be treated with kidd gloves. Once a consumer is happy with a product they tend to be loyal customers. I know I have fed my adult dog the same brand of food for that past 5 years. I have no plans of changing his diet.

There are a number of decent foods on the market. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul is a good one in my opinion as long as your dog is not allergic to grains.
I think it is safe to say that a lot more dogs are allergic to corn meal than rice. : )
